Spirits

The Spirits were made for the performers of Dances of Death a piece by Michiel Vandevelde. The energy of the performers served as an inspiration for each individual mask and was drawn and created specifically for each one of them.

Spirits were made for Dances of Death

In the 21st century, death is everywhere: new incurable diseases, rising suicide rates, the consequences of climate change. How do we relate to death? How would a dance of death be danced today?

The masks are an essential part of this performance and are one with each dancer.

More about Dances of Death

Dances of Death is a physically intense performance with seven dancers and one singer. You encounter a community coming together on stage to commemorate death. The performers evoke a ritual in which they timetravel past different dances of death, from the distant past to more recent history. Building upon the ashes of the past, they dance, they breathe, they cry, they laugh, they sing, in a cycle between life and death.

The dance material is based on three short 16mm videos that choreographer Michiel Vandevelde inherited from his mother. Her dance consists of movements with influences from social, folkloristic, and modern dances.
